The Regulations
Each of the principal modes of transport has its own specific regulations. Progress towards harmonisation is taking place, but the dynamics and characteristics of each transit mode means that there will always be some aspects that are different. Therefore, each set must always be considered and complied with.
The principal transit modes of land/sea/air are governed by the following Regulations:
-
Sea: IMDG
- Air: IATA/ ICAO
- Road: ADR
- Road: CDG (Domestic UK)
- Rail: RID
They each have common principles that relate to:
(1) Classification: the substance classification, fundamental to the application of the Regulations, is the classification of the hazardous properties of the substances. This must be undertaken by the consignor/supplier/shipper. It is not the responsibility of the forwarder or carrier.
(2) Packaging: the capacity, style and type of packages acceptable.
(3) Marking/labelling: information of the substance and the type and format of the labels to appear on the packages.
(4) Documentation: the details and form of declaration.
